Our beloved mother and grandmother Nereryda E. Cejas at age 84, passed peacefully in Portland January 23, 2018 joining her husband, Pedro, while surrounded by her loving daughters Mayra and Nelly. Born in Cuba in 1933, she was the second oldest of 7 siblings shouldering the majority of the responsibility for their care. She met her life-long partner, and future husband, falling in love at first sight as a teenager. She noticed him as he would walk past her yard after his baseball practices. They married in 1952 in Cuba and In 1966 Nereyda, her husband and two daughters, made the ultimate sacrifice by leaving Cuba and immigrating to America with nothing but the clothes on their back. A decision they made in order to give their daughters a life with freedom and opportunities.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, always kind and loving to everyone she met. She gave comfort to all she met with simply her smile. Her home in Portland was a regular stop for many in the Cuban community, whether it be for seeking advice or just needing a friendly conversation and a delicious home-cooked Cuban meal. Nereyda loved her family with all her heart and was loved by many. She is survived by two of her siblings, her two daughters, Mayra and Nelly, her grandchildren, Grace, Nicholas, and Alex and her great-grandson, Brooklyn and many precious life-long friends.
Our mother will always be in our hearts and know her journey after this life will be met with the kindness she has given all her life, may she go in peace and God Bless you Mother.
