Norma T. Johanson

May 14, 1920 — July 31, 2013

Norma Theadora Johanson was born in Portland, Oregon, on May 14, 1920, the only child of Nanny (Carlson) Johanson and John E. Johanson. Her parents owned a farm in Clackamas where Norma spent most of her childhood. After her father's death when Norma was 11, she and her mother moved to the northeast area of Portland. Norma graduated from Jefferson High School in 1937 and the University of Oregon in 1941, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. While in college, she pledged Alpha Gamma Delta sorority, and remained an active member throughout her life. Norma also was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Society.

After graduation from college, Norma enlisted in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service), a division of the U. S. Navy that consisted entirely of women. Her three-year service provided Norma with opportunities to travel and develop life-long friendships. She was honorably discharged from active duty as a Lieutenant (jg) in 1946 after spending the last year of service as the Disbursing Officer at the U. S. Naval Hospital in Annapolis, Maryland.

A few months before her enlistment in the WAVES, Norma began working for Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone in the accounting group of the engineering department. She returned to that job after her discharge from the Navy, and retired in 1977 after 36 years of service.

Norma was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church in Portland.

Norma was preceded in death by her parents; sister Vera Karlsson Lindström; niece
Ann-Christine Lindström Karlström; nephew Alf Lindström; and aunt Sigrid Johnson. She
is survived by her nephews Bo Lindström of Tyresõ, Sweden, and Lennart Lindström of
Tumba, Sweden; cousin Bonney Carlson of Grants Pass, Oregon; and many, many friends
and extended family in Sweden and the United States.
