Phyllis Walker
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Phyllis Walker passed away peacefully in her home on the morning of Thursday, June 23rd, 2016. Born in Portland on October 26, 1929 to Page and Wilma Stauffer, she embraced the Oregon pioneer spirit of her family and enjoyed monthly lunch gatherings with relatives. Phyllis graduated from Medford High School in 1948 and received a Bachelor of Education degree from Southern Oregon University in 1953. On August 8, 1953 Phyllis married Richard “Dick” Walker and was blessed with 58 years of love and friendship until his passing in 2012. Together they made many trips to his family homesteads in Northern Ireland where she shared his love of family and friends. Her lifelong passion for education was exemplified through 31 years as an elementary school teacher for Portland Public Schools and later through her involvement with Chapter AV of the P.E.O Sisterhood where Phyllis championed educational opportunities for women. In 1987 Phyllis became one of the first female members of the Peninsula Kiwanis Club and took a special interest in the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp which empowers children and adults with disabilities. As a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church she made many enduring friendships and cherished her new friends – neighbors and staff alike - at Russellville Park. Phyllis is survived by her loving and caring family: Jon and Andrea Walker of Beavercreek, Oregon; Linda and Darren Brady of Woodinville, Washington; and grandsons Jacob Brady and Matthew Brady. Phyllis enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading and gardening. Her favorite color was yellow. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1200 SW Alder, Portland on Friday, July 8th at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to P.E.O. International or Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp.
