Richard J. Schmidt

Richard J. "Smitty" Schmidt was born on July 4, 1925 in Portland to John and Anna Schmidt. He attended Immaculate Heart School, and was a graduate of Jefferson High School. During World War II he served in the Army aboard a military ship in the Western Pacific. He was a medical Technical Sergeant. In 1950 he married Eva Kraft. He had worked as a store keeper for the City of Portland Parks. After retiring he was an officer of Cherry Blossom Senior, and did volunteer work for Loaves and Fishes. His wife died in 1985, and his son Richie died in 2000. Smitty died on October 2, 2008 in Portland at the age of 83. He is survived by his daughter Barbara Byes; his step-son, Willard Cochran, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
