Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Richard Francis Walker known to friends and family as "Dick" passed away in his home on March 28, 2012. He was born 86 years ago in Portland, Oregon on November 29, 1925 to William and Elizabeth Walker, who had emigrated from Northern Ireland. He graduated from Jefferson High School in 1943, and attended business school in New York City. On August 8, 1953, Dick married Phyllis Stauffer – they were blessed to share over 58 years of love and friendship.
Dick worked for The Aluminum Company of America for 31 years, from 1952 to his retirement in 1983. He was a proud member and past president of the ALCOA 25 Year Club. After retiring from ALCOA Dick became an active member of Peninsula Kiwanis Club and served as Lieutenant Governor from 1989-1990. In 1987 he was a delegate to the International Kiwanis convention in Washington D.C., and was proud to cast his pro vote to allow women to become members of Kiwanis.
One of Dick's passions was music. He was a tenor soloist, choir singer and played both the organ and piano. He served as Choir Director at Northminster Presbyterian Church for 17 years followed by another 17 years at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He was a member of the American Guild of Organists. He played and sang at both weddings and funerals. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, an usher, on various committees and was often the Lay Reader on Sunday mornings.
Dick was forever proud of his Northern Irish and British ancestry - his father William was an escort to the British Royal Family. Dick and Phyllis enjoyed many trips "across the pond" to visit relatives and explore the land of his ancestors.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; son, Jon and his wife, Andrea (Portland); daughter Linda Brady and her husband, Darren and two grandsons, Jacob and Matthew (Woodinville, WA) and a host of family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 1200 SW Alder, Portland on Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp or Julia West House.
