Robert S. Horning

Robert S. Horning of Portland died on Feb. 28, 2007 in Rancho Mirage, Calif., at the age of 88. He was born May 15, 1918 in Eugene, Ore., to Emil and Rose Horning. The family later moved to Portland. He attended U.S. Grant High School and was a member of the tennis team, coached by his father. He attended the University of Oregon, putting himself through college by playing trumpet in, and writing arrangements for, a dance band composed of high school classmates. He graduated with a BA in Business Administration. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II, but received a medical discharge due to a non-combat illness.
He married Ruth Foster in Ashland in 1946. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in 2006. For the past three decades they have divided their time between Portland and Palm Desert, Calif. Robert is survived by sons, Dick (Polk County, Ore.), twin sons David (Aloha) and John (Grants Pass), and daughter, Sherrie (Corvallis), and their spouses; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
During his career he worked for several companies, eventually rising to the position of Controller and Vice President of Finance for Mail-Well Envelope Company in Milwaukie, Ore. He retired in 1975. He served as President of the National Office Managers Association and Financial Executives Institute and was a member of the Society of Freemasons.
Bob began playing tennis again in the mid-1960s and continued playing competitively until 2000. He was ranked as high as third nationally in mena�(TM)s doubles. He was a member of the Pacific Northwest Tennis Association and the Southern California Tennis Association. In Palm Desert, Bob and Ruth assisted with local tennis tournaments. Bob represented the United States in tennis competitions in Austria, Germany, Spain, France, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Japan. He always traveled with his trumpet and often sat in with dance bands playing big band and jazz music.
Mr. and Mrs. Horning enjoyed collecting antiques and traveling.
A memorial service will be held at Rose City Funeral Home on Friday, March 16, 2007 at 1 p.m. A celebration of his life will follow at the Irvington Tennis Club at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the American Heart Association.
