ROBERT H. LOTHIAN March 18, 1949 – May 19, 2013

Bob Lothian passed away Sunday, May 19 in Portland from cancer. Bob was born March 18, 1949 in Eugene. He attended Harvey Scott Elementary in Northeast Portland and graduated from Rex Putnam High School. He attended University of Oregon 1967-70. He received a bachelor's degree from Reed College in 1982 and a master's in journalism from Columbia University in 1992. In his early career Bob worked as a welder, mechanic and U.S. Forest Service firefighter and wilderness ranger. Transitioning into journalism, Bob freelanced in the 1980's for the Oregonian, Portland Observer and Catholic Sentinel. He then worked as reporter and photographer for the Bandon Western World, Ashland Daily Tidings and Albany Democrat Herald. In his later career, Bob worked 18 years for Multnomah County Aging and Disability Services as case manager and hearings representative. A long time member of the Mazamas climbing and outdoor club, Bob summited 11 of the 16 major Northwest peaks including Rainier, Olympus and Glacier Peak. He served on the Mazamas conservation committee. Bob also served as board member for the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Multnomah County. He is survived by brothers James D. Gilbert of Molalla, John W. and Thomas D. Lothian of Portland and son Aaron D. Smith of Spokane. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 28, at 2 PM at Rose City Funeral Home , 5625 NE Fremont, Portland. Donations to the Mazamas and National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Multnomah County.
