Ruth Wilhelmine Doern

Ruth Wilhelmine Doern went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, January 5, 2013. Ruth was born at her parents' Sellwood home on October 23, 1924. She joined her parents, George and Wilhelmine, and her 5 year old brother, George. Six years later, her sister, Gloria joined the family. Ruth was proud of her family's Austrian heritage. Both parents immigrated from Austria before they married.
Ruth attended Sellwood Grade School and graduated from Washington High School in 1942. Childhood summers were spent at Sellwood Park in the swimming pool and on the tennis courts. Grace Bible Church (formerly First Evangelical Reformed Church) was an important part of Ruth's family. At age 14, she completed confirmation classes taught by Pastor Gottlieb Hafner. Ruth taught Sunday school for the primary department for many years.
After high school, Ruth attended Biola University in California where she earned a degree in Bible in 1956. Returning to her parents' home in Sellwood, Ruth worked as a secretary at Juvenile Court for Multnomah County. In her free time she enjoyed singing in the church choir. She also sang soprano solos at church and for weddings.
Following her retirement in 1987, Ruth faithfully took care of her mother until her mother's death in 1994. After her sister, Gloria, retired the two sisters spent many wonderful years sharing their childhood Sellwood home. They enjoyed traveling to Santa Barbara and attending conferences at Cannon Beach Christian Conference Center.
Ruth is survived by her sister, Gloria, and several cousins.
