Ruth Marcia Pierce

July 14, 1923 — April 3, 2013

Marcia Pierce, 89, longtime resident of the Portland area, died April 3, 2013, in Scappoose, from a stroke. Ruth Marcia Swale was born in Seattle, where she attended Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington. She received a BA degree in 1945. During World War II, she worked for the Weather Bureau at the Portland Airport, where she met Rex Eugene Pierce, an air traffic controller. They were married in 1947 and settled in Parkrose (Maywood Park). In the 1960s, Mrs. Pierce obtained a teaching certificate from Portland State College and worked as a substitute teacher. She also taught Sunday school and was active in several Portland churches in later years. After her husband's death in 2004, she moved to Cherrywood Village in Portland, where she lived until 2011. She was generous with family and friends, and enjoyed camping, traveling, and attending music performances. Survivors include two sons, Allen Pierce and Calvin Pierce, and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sister, Jean Woodward. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Portland Rescue Mission.
