Ruth Arlis Mathews

Ruth Arlis Burke was born January 29, 1929 in Pierre South Dakota to Thomas W. Burke and Mary E (Wold) Burke. She grew up on the prairies of South Dakota with her older Sister Mary Ellen and younger brother, John. Her fondest childhood memories are when they lived with her maternal grandparents, Hans and Pearl Wold in the "Black Hills" of South Dakota. Her grandfather was a baptist minister and organized at least 4 or 5 churches in the area. He traveled around on Sundays preaching at different churches. They moved to Oregon in 1945 and she graduated from Roosevelt High in 1949. She married Milton L. Mathews on April 5, 1959. She was a homemaker. She also enjoyed painting and was quite good. Before she was married one of her jobs was painting color into black and white photos.

Her main concern in life was worrying about her children and raising them to know God.

She is survived by her children: Bill Mathews, Laura Smith, and Ben Mathews; her brother Jack Burke; and by her grandchildren: Dawn Williams, Mara Lockard, Ariana Smith, and Matthew Bierbaum.
