Ruth Helen Charlotte Enfield

December 14, 1917 — April 30, 2017

Ruth Helen Charlotte Andrews was born Dec. 14, 1917 in North Bend, Ore., to Charles Lewis and Anna Andrews. She died April 30, 2017 after a long and wonderful life. Though her first name was Ruth, her family and friends called her Helen. Originally from the N.W., from 6-12 she lived in the Los Angeles area, and then moved to Moundridge, Kan., where she finished elementary school. At age 13 she returned to Portland. Helen graduated from Washington H.S. in 1935 and worked at Wards for six years as an adjuster. On New Year’s Eve 1937, her brother Paul’s best friend, Romer Enfield, asked her to go to a Sprocketeer’s Bicycle Club party. He kept her out most of the night, but not too late to ask for a second date on New Years Day, 1938. May 28, 1942, they were married. The Enfield’s were members of the First Orthodox Presbyterian Church for most of their married lives. Helen was active in the women’s work, president of the Missionary Today, also the Chapel Guild. She taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School for almost 40 years. She loved preparing and telling Bible stories to young children. Helen’s hobbies were sewing, writing poetry for family, friends and special occasions, also gardening. But above all, the one great love of her life was her husband, her Daddy Duck, her Romer. Preceded in death by her loving spouse Nov. 16, 2004. It seems as though Helen and Romer are finally together again, forever. Helen is survived by her sons, Gregg, Brian, his wife, Linda; daughter, Ruth Roake, her husband, Jim; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m., May 6, 2017, at Rose City Funeral Home, viewings Friday. Reception to follow at Ruth’s home, 15903 S.E. Rivershore Dr. Vancouver WA, 98683 If you feel inclined to make a donation, please do so on the behalf of Helen Enfield to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.
