Sara Virginia Lasky passed away in her parent's loving arms at the age of 35 at the Legacy Hopewell House Hospice in Portland, Oregon. She died as a result of a brain tumor.
Sara was born on September 7, 1977 in Morgantown, West Virginia to Gareth L. Lasky and Gale Griffin Lasky. Her parents often moved to further their education and she was fortunate to live in several beautiful states, such as Florida, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Sara has maintained life-long friendships from each of these locations. The Family settled in Oregon in 1993. She truly loved Oregon.
Sara's high school education was completed in Ashland, Kentucky and Salem, Oregon. While in Ashland, Sara displayed a talent to play the flute and piccolo. Sara transferred to South Salem High School and continued her musical accomplishments. She was awarded the John Philippe Sousa Award for best band member and was a member of the first All City Band, as well as the South Salem Youth Symphony. Upon graduation, she received a music performance scholarship to the University of Oregon where she played in the Wind Ensemble and marching band. While there, Sara also completed two Bachelor level degrees; Environmental Science and Geography/Cartography. A part of her work was published in the 2000 Oregon Atlas.
Sara decided to pursue her dream to become a teacher. She enrolled in Pacific University and received her Master of Arts in Teaching. Her primary professor reported her to be a "gifted" student with unlimited potential for teaching others. Sara was elated when she was hired as a teacher by the Hillsborough School District. She taught at Brookwood Elementary School and R.A. Brown Middle School until her health would not allow her to follow her passion. Administrators and fellow staff reported she was an outstanding teacher who was loved by all, including her students. She truly enjoyed imparting knowledge to others so that they could improve their lives. Sara recently received the "extra mile award" from R.A. Brown Middle School. This states "Your daily walk alongside children has taught them how to walk, and by your example…where to walk. Your footprints will be the stepping stones to their future."
In Portland, Sara continued her musical interests. She belonged to the Greater Portland Flute Society and the Brooklyn Music Society. She also played with several local artists and groups, such as Flote, Weinland New Year's Eve Super Group, Laura Gibson, St. Frankee Lee, and her friend Jenny Conlee-Drizos.
Sara was known as a loving social person. She had many, many friends. She was not judgmental of others and viewed all people to be of value. She enjoyed hiking, camping, and the beauty of nature. She loved dogs and cats, especially her pet cat Stimpy.
Sara is survived by her parents, Gareth and Gale Lasky of Salem, Oregon and her grandparents Chris and Doris Griffin of Lakeland, Florida. She will also be missed by her uncles, aunts, cousins, and numerous family members.
Sara asked that donations be made to the Humane Society of Portland to save , shelter, and find new homes for adoptable dogs and cats.
