Sotere "Sam" Constantine Notos

Sotere (Sam) Constantine Notos February 29, 1936-October 7, 2021 Sam passed away peacefully on October 7, 2021. He was born in Portland, Oregon, the youngest of four siblings and the son of Greek immigrants, William Nicholas Notos and Paraskevi (Pikio) Notos. Sam was vibrant, energetic, and full of life. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and unconditional friend to so many. His strength, perseverance, and commitment were defining characteristics to all that knew him. As a young boy, Sam lived in a railroad station house in the town of Multnomah with his immigrant parents. Sam attended Multnomah grade school and then graduated from Lincoln High School in Portland, Oregon. Throughout high school, he was an avid baseball player and also played football and participated on the rally squad. Sam’s baseball career was where he excelled. He played competitive baseball throughout high school and in turn earned a scholarship to play baseball for the University of Oregon. Sam was a member of the fraternity Alpha Tau Omega and to this day still has many life-long friends from his time at Oregon. While at Oregon, he met the love of his life on a blind date, Charlene Isaacs, and was married April 4, 1959. He and his wife supported the University of Oregon and attended Duck football games with friends for over 57 years. After college Sam served in the Army Reserves at Fort Ord. He then began his family and worked for IBM and then as a commercial real estate broker until retirement. Sam enjoyed many activities such as golf, snow skiing, and working out. He married into a golfing family and become a member of Columbia Edgewater Country Club for over 60 years. Golf was Sam’s passion and you could always find him on the course with his friends and family! He was one of the original founders of Tournament Golf Incorporated which sponsored an LPGA tournament, bringing professional women’s golf to Portland. He spent many years as a member of the Multnomah Athletic Club where he enjoyed working out and social activities with friends and family. He is survived by his sister, Victoria Reed, daughters Cindy (Dana) Aschbacher, Pam (Sean) Scanlan, 3 grandchildren, Ally Aschbacher, Mitchell Scanlan, Jackie Scanlan, brothers-in-law Ron (Donna) Isaacs, and Terry (Vickie) Isaacs. The funeral service will be held at 11:00am Tuesday, October 19th at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 3131 N.E. Glisan St., Portland, OR. A reception will follow from 2:30-5:30pm at the Stockpot Broiler, 8200 S.W. Scholls Ferry Rd., Beaverton, OR. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be directed to the University of Oregon Foundation in memory of Sam Notos.
