Stuart Milton Richey was born 97 years ago on March 28, 1912 to Willie and Olive Richey at Boring, Oregon at the cabin his father built in Pleasant Valley. His pioneer ancestors settled on land claims in this area when they came across the Oregon Trail in 1852. His namesake, Stuart Richey, donated land to the Pleasant Valley School at the corner of Foster & Richey Road. This little red-haired boy joined his older sister Alice and was later joined by younger brother Sterling. He was raised on a diversified farm and learned hard work, and frugality as well as a love for nature and the outdoors. He was gifted in building, creating, and fixing things, and crafted many things out of wood. I always felt my dad could figure out how to fix about anything.
After graduating from Gresham high school in 1932, he went to L. L. Adcox trade school in Portland and graduated in Diesel electrical engineering. During World War II he worked at the Portland U.S. Naval shipyards building aircraft carriers.
He attended Lents Friends Church and as a youth accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. There he met Violet Braithwaite who he married on September 3, 1936, married for 73 years.
Their first home was a garage he built and they lived there several years while he was building their Portland home next to Violet's parents, Fred & Elizabeth Braithwaite. During this time they had three children, Milton, Meredith and Marilyn, all within 4 years time. In the early 1940s daddy contacted polio. God miraculously healed him and he had only minor after effects from this disease. Later they lived in Baker where they lived for about 3 years and in 1948 moved to Newberg where they continued to live and raise their family.
He owned and operated his own business located on Portland Highway called Richey's Appliance and Service. This business was located on the east end of town at what was considered the outskirts of Newberg. Today the Walgreen drug store is located on this property. After selling his business, he worked for George Fox College for 14 years as their director of physical plant and grounds. While there he engineered the building of a footbridge across the canyon leading to the new dorm, near Wheeler Sports arena.
After retirement he and mom kept busy traveling with Volunteers on Wheels and also went on a short term mission trip to Bolivia and Peru to help the missionaries.
He's always had a love for the outdoors & God's creation. He loved camping and planning hunts as much as the hunt itself. He enjoyed traveling & took many trips across the United States, including Alaska, Hawaii, and England, Mexico and South America.
He's been a long time member of Newberg Friends Church and in his younger years was active teaching a boys Sunday school class and mentoring young men. When asked one time how he could afford all his hunting trips, daddy replied he saved money by never spending it on bad habits like smoking or drinking. In later years he loved to tell stories, usually about hunting trips.
He always had a tender heart to follow God's leading in his life & was quick to make up and say he was sorry and ask forgiveness. He was a wonderful Christian example to his family, both in word and deed and the example of a loving marriage gave security to his children and family. When growing up I remember him as honest, trustworthy, even-tempered and never saw my father get angry.
A lifetime verse that depicts our father is Joshua 24:15b...."As for me and my household we will serve the Lord." A Christian heritage is the best legacy we can leave our children.
He is survived by his wife Violet Braithwaite Richey, his daughters Meredith Morse of Tigard, Marilyn Crover of Halsey, 9 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Preceding him in death were his parents, his son Milton Glen Richey in 1979, brother Sterling Richey and sister, Alice Richey Rypczynski.
There will be an empty spot in our lives but we know we'll meet again in heaven. He has left a Godly heritage to his family and may we be challenged to pass it on to the next generation.
