Susan Sumiko (Kawasaki) Fujino

February 19, 1927 — May 29, 2014

Sumiko "Sue" Fujino, 87,of Portland Oregon died peacefully May 29, 2014, with her family by her side.  She was born to the late Tomihei and Kusuno Kawasaki in Portland, Oregon.  Sue attended Washington High School before she was interned at the Minidoka War Relocation Center in Hunt, Idaho where she graduated.  She left Minidoka to attend school on a scholarship at Ohio Wesleyan University and later the University of Washington, majoring in Pharmacy.  In 1947, Sue married Takeshi Fujino. They raised their family in SE Portland, where they lived together for 66 years in the same home. Last year, Sue moved to the Mcloughlin Place Senior Living in Oregon City, where she was cared for and loved by many.

Sue and Tak were owners and operators of the Franklin Market Grocery Store for 26 years, and later owners and operators of Woodstock Wine and Deli.

Sue found the greatest pleasure taking care of her family.  Her marriage to Tak of 67 years ended at her death.  She took care of her mother for many years before Kusuno's passing.  Sue was fiercely devoted and concerned for all of her family and friends, putting the needs of others above her own, making sure everyone had enough to eat, drink and be happy.

Sue is survived by her husband Tak Fujino along with their children: Gregg Fujino of Portland, OR; Donna Fujino of Happy Valley, OR; Gary Fujino of Mesa, AZ and their spouses, Nyla Thomas, Mark Chase and Char Fujino.  She is also survived by her grandchildren, whom she referred to as her "treasures"; David, Christine and spouse Jordan, Allison, Brian, Madeline, Jack, great-granddaughter Liahona, and her two sisters Alice Sumida and Margie Ogawa along with many family and friends.

Sue's Celebration of Life Gathering will be June 4, 4:30pm at Epworth United Methodist Church, 1333 SE 28th Ave.  Private burial at the Japanese Ancestral Society of Portland Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Oregon Nikkei Legacy Center 121 NW 2nd Ave, Portland, Oregon 97209.
