Thomas G. Karter, 73, of Portland, passed away at his home on Sept. 22, 2014. He was born December 21, 1940 , in Chicago, Ill., to Gus and Bertha Karter. He grew up in Knox, Indiana. He graduated from Purdue University and then earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence law degree, graduating in the the top 10% of his class at the Indiana University School of Law. He was admitted to the Oregon State Bar in 1966 and moved to Portland to open his law practice, which continued until his retirement. Tom was married to Mary Karter (Olson) for 27 years. Tom is survived by his life partner of 17 years, Anita Jacobs; his sister Patricia Smith; his sons Thomas, Jr. (Liza) and Scott (Toni); and five grandchildren (Alex, Daniel, Kenny, Tommy and Ronnie). A celebration of Tom's life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2014, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in southeast Portland. Remembrances may be sent to St. Paul Lutheran Church.
