Obituary
Veona Matlock-Monroe was born on December 22, 1927 to Amy O. Matlock and Willie Smith in Thornton, Arkansas.
She attended high school in Fordyce, Arkansas. At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. She was taken to a river in the town during a weekday along with the mothers and missionary women of the church and was baptized by the Pastor.
In the early 1940's, she married Charles W. Monroe. Mother Monroe moved to Vanport in Oregon in 1948 and was a survivor of the flood. She later moved to the northeast Portland area.
She became a member of the Mt. Sinai Community Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor M. C. Cheek, Pastor Leonard Ransom, Pastor Emanuel Warren and Pastor Donald Frazier during the early 1950's through 1990's. She was a member of the choir, served as a Missionary in the Women's Ministry and was a tremendous cook of the church. She later became a member of the Philadelphia Community Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of her son, Pastor Roy E. Clay, Sr. where she remained a faithful member until the Lord called her home. She was a mother on the Mother's Ministry and was known for her favorite meals and desserts that she would prepare for the church.
Mother Veona Monroe worked as a domestic worker for many years and was a homemaker. She was a unique woman of many hands; sewing, cooking, cleaning, gardening and decorating. She loved and enjoyed wearing hats and dressing in all of her old and new fashions. She was a sophisticated woman that had a lot of style and class.
When asked how to spell her name, she would say "V" as in victory. This word fits her in many ways; a characteristic of victory is to be victorious. She has overcome many trials and tribulations in her life while raising ten children in a victorious manner. God blessed her with the strength and ability to endure through it all. One of her favorite scriptures that sustained her through the years was Psalms 37. She said she prayed late at night when everyone was asleep because she felt God was listening only to her.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles W. Monroe; one sister; Olivee Matlock, one son; Charles Edward Monroe, four grandchildren and one great grand-child.
She leaves to cherish her memories; one sister, Beatrice White, sons; Pastor Roy E. Clay, Sr., Carl (Randy) Monroe all of Portland, Oregon, daughters; Clotine Turner of Campti, Louisiana, Diannia Rogers of Aurora, Colorado; Kaye Robinson of Tolleson, Arizona, Alice "Poochie" Monroe of Berkley, California, Patsy Stephens, Faye Shabazz, Marilyn Monroe and Ronda Taylor-Link all of Portland, Oregon; five son-in-laws and one daughter-in-law; 20 grand-children, 26 great grand- children, 6 great great-grand-children and a host of relatives and friends. She loved us and will be deeply missed.
