Verna Vachter was born to Mary and Martin Vachter on the family farm near Gervais, Oregon on May 23, 1923. She died on November 30, 2014 in Portland after a long period of declining health. She was 91 years old.
While a young girl Verna went to a two-room schoolhouse, Belle Passi Public School. She graduated from Gervais High School in 1941 as class valedictorian. She graduated from Northwestern School of Commerce in Portland in 1942.
Verna worked at the Charles F. Berg clothing store in downtown Portland as secretary to the company president, Forrest Berg. She married Francis Jackson on June 3, 1947, and they were married until his death in October of 2000. After Berg's she worked for the National Association of Manufacturers, until she left the workforce to start a family
She and Francis had two children, Ronald and Timothy. After her children were older she worked for Dunham Printing when she and Francis became part owners of that company. After leaving Dunham Printing she worked at Branham until she retired.
Verna enjoyed gardening and created a beautiful yard, a photo of which was used on Lilly Miller fertilizer boxes. She also enjoyed sewing and became quite expert at that.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Vachter of Portland, and her sons Ronald Jackson of Portland and Timothy Jackson of Everett, Washington.
