Vivian Veronica (Pauly) Hough

April 14, 1921 — February 21, 2014

Vivian Veronica Hough, 92, of Portland OR, passed away peacefully on February 21st, 2014, surrounded by her family.  She was born in Keota Iowa on April 14th, 1921 to Teresa (Conrad) and John Henry Pauly.  Vivian, along with 7 siblings grew up on the farm in Fairfield Iowa, until she married Rex Hough and moved to the Northwest  in 1942.  She lived a long and wonderful life and has been adored by her four sons, Larry, Merlyn, Roger and Darryl as well as her daughters, Barb (Janson), Sheryl (Pearsall), Janet (Emch) and Elaine (Luckenbaugh).  She was blessed with 22 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She also leaves behind her loving sister, Loyola Davis of Portland.  Vivian was preceded in death by her husband Rex, who passed in 1967 and her oldest son Larry who passed in 1992.

Vivian and Rex owned Evergreen Garden Supply on SE Stark at 99th  for over 27 years where they sold bedding plants, shrubs and flocked Christmas trees and then worked at Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen until she retired to spend time in her beautiful garden. Vivian raised all 8 children by herself over the past 47 years.  She was very active and attended Catholic mass daily until the last several years and drove herself until last year.  She faithfully walked a minimum of 2 miles a day for years and enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, word find and her favorite show was Dancing with the Stars, especially when Derek Hough went to the finals (no relation!). Her huge garden was her pride and joy. Her grandchildren were so precious to her and she was famous for her 2 dollar bills, carrot cake, zucchini bread and oatmeal cookies!  She crocheted many, many afghans that she gifted to family members and she lived completely independently in the house that her father built in NE Portland in 1950.

She was struck by a severe heart attack on Valentine's Day and spent six days in Providence Hospital where she had excellent care by many proficient nurses and doctors.  She will be missed by many and loved by all who knew her.

Services will be held, 10am March 8th at St. Joseph The Worker Catholic Church, 2310 SE 148th Ave, Portland, with a celebration following.  A private family committal will be held at Gethsemani Catholic Cemetery on Mt Scott, March 10th.  If you would like to send a note, condolences or a story about Vivian to the family, please send email to grandma@houghteam.com .  In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to mom’s favorite charities: St. Vincent DePaul, Catholic Charities of Portland, St. Therese Parish or St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church.
