William Frank Kingsbury died November 21st at the age of 78 while pursuing his favorite pastime, hiking.
Bill was born July 29, 1936, the youngest of Esther and Hale Kingsbury’s six children. He grew up on a dairy farm in Washington, New Jersey. He attended Rutgers University, served in the U.S. Army, and then entered the U.S. Foreign Service. He served in Japan, Korea, Spain, the Netherlands, and Washington, D.C. While in Korea, he married Melinda Wendell in 1969. They had three children.
Bill retired from the State Department in 1996. He and Melinda moved to Oregon in 1998, where he avidly pursued the outdoor life, including hiking, camping, and snow-shoeing with Mazamas and the Oregon Trails Club. He served as an elder and was a member of the choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed reading, the arts, and travel as well as being a beer and coffee afficionado.
Bill is survived by his loving wife Melinda, son Matthew (Joanna), daughters Amy (Leonard) and Kathryn, his four grandchildren and his brother Paul and sister Ruth. We will miss him.
A memorial service is planned at Westminster Presbyterian Church on January 24, 2015 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Music Fund (1624 NE Hancock, Portland OR 97212).
