Wilma Juanita Burnside

September 6, 1909 — October 4, 2008

Wilma was born in Garwin, Iowa. She married John Newton Burnside on December 19, 1936 in Davenport, Iowa.

She attended Cedar Falls Iowa Teachers College for one year and then she earned her Registered Nursing Diploma from Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She worked at Boone County Hospital six years before she was married.

They moved to Davenport, Iowa in 1936 where Jane was born. They moved to Boone, Iowa in 1940 and she lived with John's parents and worked at the hospital while John went to radio school in Kansas City for one year. When John started working for Northwest Airlines she was a homemaker until 1957 at which point they moved to Portland, Oregon. She then went to work at Doernbecher Hospital as an admitting nurse. She retired in 1974 and she and John had 14 wonderful years of golfing and traveling until John died in 1988. She was a widow 20 years. She enjoyed playing bridge at the senior centers and also traveling with friends and relatives. She saw all three of her grandsons graduate from college and graduate schools, which pleased her as she was a strong advocate of education and encouraged them and helped them in their pursuits.

She was a member of Rose City Park Methodist Church for 51 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents Gerald and Ethel Bywater, her husband John Burnside, and her brother, Wayne Bywater.

She is survived by her daughter, Jane Pubols and three grandsons, Greg Pubols, Bill Pubols, and Eric Pubols, and ten great grandchildren, Amber, Rebekah, Kathryn, Evan, Maggie, Alex, and Caden Pubols and Gabe, Carson and Lindsay Black and one great great grand daughter, Lucy Black.
