WILMA MARIE (BILLIE) CARMAN
November 9, 1921 to May 17, 2013
Wilma "Billie" Carman was the third of four children born to Clarence and Maude Rouse Carman in Oberlin KS. Her family lived in a number of small towns in the Midwest, eventually settling in Norton KS where Billie graduated from Norton High School. After graduation, she attended an art school in Kansas City until the advent of WWII. At that time, she followed her parents and younger brother Philip to Portland OR. Her two sisters, Agnes and Cleo (Tweed), eventually followed them here. In 1948, they purchased a home in NE Portland where her parents, two sisters, and her brother-in –law (Doral Tweed) lived for over 40 years. Her niece, Terry (Tweed Carroll-Gettel), lived there also as well as Phil and other assorted relatives who lived there from time to time.
Billie worked for several companies in the forties before starting her career at a small lumber company that became Willamette Industries. She worked for Willamette for over 30 years and retired as the assistant to the chief accountant. At the time, this was a corporate level that few women achieved.
After the passing of her parents and sisters, Billie moved with Doral to Lake Oswego in 1998 to be nearer her niece. Billie devoted most of her retirement to taking care of others. She was a wonderful caregiver to her sister Agnes who had cancer and later to Doral as he slipped into Alzheimers. In 2009, due to health issues, she moved in with her niece Terry and her husband Bill Gettel. Living there allowed her to enjoy her great-great nephew Cayden who helped keep her smiling and laughing.
Although she had no children of her own, she was much more than just an aunt to Terry. Through the years, she was always there to help and always more than generous to Terry and her family.
Billie had a wonderful and at times rather wicked sense of humor and kept people laughing. One favorite family quote was from her father: "Billie thinks she's a wit, but she's only half right!!" The family thought that was hilarious, except, of course, Billie!! She loved reading (romances and mysteries), poetry (and writing a few funny ones herself), knitting, sewing and doing word puzzles. She was very clever, artistic and creative.
Aunt Billie will be greatly missed by her niece Terry Carroll-Gettel and Terry's husband Bill Gettel. Great Aunt Billie will also be greatly missed by Terry's children, Cori Carroll and Cameron Carroll and his wife Lauren. And Great Great Aunt BB will also be missed by Cayden Carroll (soon to be age 4)!! She is also survived by her sister in law Pat Carman of Florida. She was predeceased by her parents, Clarence and Maude Carman, her sister Agnes Carman, her sister and brother in law Cleo and Doral Tweed and her brother Dr Philip Carman.
