Wilna Jean (Van Volkingburgh) Anderson passed away at the age of 93 on Friday, August 23, 2013. She was a resident of the Pacifica Senior Living Calaroga Terrace for the past six years. She succumbed to a heart attack on the afternoon of August 23.
Wilna was born January 5, 1920, in Stevenson, Washington, and lived a good deal of her young life in Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. She was the daughter of Ethel Hall Van Volkingburgh. In 1940, she received her High School Diploma at Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. In June 1941 and then August 1943, she achieved an Interim, and then Permanent Elementary and Intermediate School Certificate(s) to teach grades I to X in Alberta public schools; in December 1943, and then August 1946, she achieved an Interim First Class, and then First Class Teacher's Certificate of Qualification as a Teacher for British Columbia; in October 1952, she achieved an Elementary School Certificate Advanced (E.A.) to teach Intermediate grades in British Columbia. She came to the States in 1955, and achieved in November of 1956 a Special Certificate to teach in elementary and secondary schools in the State of Washington. Wilna married Stanley Hans Anderson on June 15, 1959, and while married to Stanley, she achieved, in August 1974, a Master of Science degree from Portland State University. The couple maintained a home in Seattle, Washington (where Stanley was employed) and a home in Portland, Oregon, where Wilna and her mother resided. Their Portland home was a duplex in Northeast Portland. Following Stanley's death on December 22, 1986, Wilna eventually sold the duplex and moved into the Ione Plaza in Southwest Portland, Park blocks. She lived there until moving to the Calaroga Terrace where a close friend of hers, Frank Sarpy, had also lived prior to his death. She took up residence in the independent living section--and independent she was. Wilna enjoyed attending and meeting friends in various senior center activities as well as the friendships she made while living at the Calaroga. Wilna was a lifelong member of such organizations as Oregon Retired Educators Association, The National Association of the Van Valkenburg Family Inc., PSU Alumni Association, and The Salvation Army Rose Center. Wilna had no children and was a devoted daughter to her mother. She enjoyed occasional visits and holidays with her cousins: Sharon Hall Ivanov (Tony); Garry Hall (Linn); Brenda Hall Hale (Rick); and their mother, Betty Hall (Wesley, deceased). She is also survived by a cousin of North Bend, Oregon, Judy Ashenfelter; and Michael Collison of White Rock, British Columbia.
A memorial service is planned for Wilna at the Calaroga Terrace Chapel, 1400 N.E. Second Avenue, Portland, Oregon 97232 on Friday, September 20, 2013 at the hour of 2 p.m. Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial service followed by a cake/coffee reception on the Terrace level. Friends of Calaroga and family members are pleased to and will take part in the service. Wilna will be buried with her husband at Willamette National Cemetery. Donations in Wilna's memory may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, one of Wilna's several endowments, which also included Portland State University.
