Obituary of Wilson Calvin Walker

February 1, 1920 ~ February 25, 2015

Funeral Service, 11:00 AM, Friday, March 6, 2015 at Rose City Funeral Home, 5625 NE Fremont St. Military Honors and committal to follow at Rose City Cemetery. Wilson passed away in Portland at Emanuel Hospital, he was 95 years old.

Born February 1, 1920 in Waterproof, Louisiana the eldest of three children born to General and Daisy (Haynes) Walker. He grew up in a small town in the northern part of Louisiana where he attended St. Joseph High School and played basketball, football and baseball. He was such an outstanding athletic after completing his junior year he was offered a scholarship to Louisiana Negro Normal College at Grambling. In July 1944 Wilson was drafted into the United States Army where he spent 15 th months before being discharged as a Sergeant.

Wilson then moved to Portland in 1945 where he continued his education at Multnomah College, while taking a course in sociology he realized this was going to be his field of study.  In 1948 Wilson graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Science and Sociology, he furthered his education at the University of British Columbia and obtained his Master Degree in Social Work at the University of Washington.  Wilson Calvin Walker married Carmen Ercell Parrish on July 18, 1947 in Portland. They were married for 61 wonderful years before she predeceased him in 2008. They’re now united in love for eternity.

Wilson is survived by his children; Florice Ercell Walker, Laodice Walker Tonkins and Wilson Parish Walker and his wife Barbara O’Hare Walker, Grandchildren LaShante’, Marie Tonkins, Justin Parrish Tonkins, Nicole Carmen Tonkins, Tasha Makana Walker Wilson, Adam Walker, great grandchildren; Aajanai Marie Glover, Aniyah Cheri Glover, Assata Amirah Campbell, Jaxson Parrish Tonkins, Josiah Parrish Lambert and Amiayah Annette Lambert as well as a host of other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by his brother Charles Walker and sister Thelma Landers.
