Zeola Merritt Thompson
March 1, 1914 — August 19, 2013
On February 1, 1914, a beautiful girl, Zeola Merritt, was born into the union of Lewis Talton Merritt and Lucinda P. Merritt, in Homer Louisisana. She graduated from Claiborne Parish High School. She married Dallas Green and the two had one child, Willie. This union would end in divorce.
Zeola moved to Portland in the early 40's to support the war effort through the shipyards. Zeola met and married Archie Thompson, Sr.. The two not only married each other, but they married their families too, with each of them bringing children to the union.
Zeola worked for White Stag as a seamstress. She worked for the company for over 22 years, and retired in the 1970's. Whereas her job was with White Stag, her calling was in the church. Zeola was one of the last founding members of Allen Temple CME church, for which she was an active member for many faithful years. She ushered and spread the word of god faithfully, and will be a sadly missed servant at Allen Temple CME.
Zeola was one of four children in her family. She and her two sisters were known to have longevity and a lot of spunk! Zeola loved to cook and can. She could can anything. Her baby chicken (Cornish game hen) in a big pan of gravy was a favorite, and a memorable sight. Her dressing was out of site! Her Ice cream, caramel cakes as well as her home made wine and brandy, will be sorely missed.
Zeola is survived by her son, Willie D. Green, Sr.; sister, Sybil Hardwick; grandchildren: Willie D. Green, Jr, Leon B. Green and Loren T. Green; Great grandchildren: Willie D. III, Leonsea, Luquaz, Tahkiyah and Alex Green; great great grandchildren: Jabari, Jakiyah, Quiten, Kayden, Harlym, and Kingston Green; daughter in law, Rita Oglesby; step children, numerous nieces and nephews and many other family members who loved her so.
